Mencken couldn’t seem more apt if one were asked to describe the political landscape in the Philippines: It is “A place where Jesus Christ and Judas Iscariot would be equals. But the betting odds would favour Judas.” Ironically, close to 81% of the 87 million or so Filipinos are Roman Catholics. Perhaps, Mencken’s words may be the answer as to why the current political crisis besetting the government of Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is where it is at today.

As many may have already come to know, it all started with the “Hello Garci” tapes. You may visit http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=timeLine in the website of the Manila Standard Today to refresh your memory on that issue. For those who are “suffering” from information overload, another helpful site to check out would be ABS-CBN’s, Isyu: Ang Pangulo at http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/storypage.aspx?storyid=9299.

With all the issues that have come out to date, the question still remains: What happens to truth and accountability? Would “the betting odds favour Judas?”
